Family and Friendship Relationships with Martha and Mary Martha's Story Scripture stories begin and end in the middle of the story of people's lives. This story is telling us that Jesus has come to the house of friends to be with them and share time with them. This is the house of Jesus' friends Martha, Mary, and Lazarus. Martha and Mary are sisters and the sister of Lazarus. Martha from this story is a person who is anxious about many things. At this moment of the story, she is concerned about having to do the serving all by herself. She shares with Jesus her concerns. Jesus asks her to choose the better part of not being anxious and worried about many things. It seems that Jesus is asking Martha to be calm and relax about serving without worry or concern. How many times are we in this very same situation when we are overwhelmed by all that has to be done, at once, and by ourselves - alone without anyone to help us. How often are we so entangled with living that we forget to take time for ourselves, to nurture ourselves, to be calm as we busy ourselves with serving others. How often do we 'do' rather than 'be' in the moment with Our Lord in prayer and love as we go about our daily tasks. Are we not the Marthas of today. Are we not trying with great difficulty to find the way of being totally committed to our passions and be totally at peace. Are we not trying to come to a balance between doing and being. continues...
